I remember the dialysis. Hemodialysis. It cleanses your blood for you when your kidneys don’t. Some people feel renewed after. Many don’t. Many get dialysis overnight so they can hold down a job during the day. It gave me extreme headaches and a feeling of my blood boiling. I mean let’s face it that’s what’s happening. Your blood leaves your body, goes though a machine to be cleaned and comes back in again. It’s pretty clever and pretty life saving.
I would sit in a chair overnight and listen to Pet Shop Boys because my best friend lent me her little tape player and headphones. I imagined what it would be like when I got ok again. It was a little dark in the dialysis room at night. And cosy. We had big armchairs and blankets. And the beep beep of machines and nurses quietly checking up on us. Soothing and safe and life saving. One of my relatives said the LGI still looked like an old workhouse.
It was a fabulous workhouse that happened to save my life
