Don’t kill trees

HonestInk,

The other week I wrote about my next door neighbour feeding the rats. Well the birds, but round here you don’t because there are too many rats. Anyway she got her son in law to cut down the two small trees that she thought were harbouring the rats. The tree next to them has two bird feeders where she has been feeding the birds/rats up until a couple of months ago but the connection is too great to comprehend. Beyond that the trees offered privacy between us and the church grounds next door. So in the interests of being a good neighbour and not wanting any young Pakistani men impaling themselves when they took a shortcut over the wall and landed on my neighbour’s son in law’s butchery of trees gardening efforts I reported it to Incommunities before the little twat son in law could do any more damage.

One day I spot a man in high viz having a look about with a sheet of paper in his hand. I got all excited in anticipation as I awaited his knock on my door. A sound guy, he commiserated, ”We don’t chop living trees down and we could have simply cut it back If she’d asked. Every tree on Incommunities properties is logged and as it has been left right now it’s dangerous”. he took some pics and went off to report it.

Fast forward to the past Friday and I’m nipping out to put several empty bottles of wine in my recycling bin and there are three guys walking towards me. Reservoir Dogs style but in high viz. Looking for the ‘dangerous tree’ it turns out. I took them round the back and showed them the offending pointy thing. Mr chatty, Mr Rastafarian and Mr on the phone explaining shit to his boss turned out to be a right laugh for the next hour..

They need a chainsaw to cut the mess down that has been made but in the meantime made it safe. It’s planting season in two weeks and I’ve been promised some nice new trees. Fabulous.
