A Quiet Riot With Words & Art

Potatoes

HonestInk,

We started a bit earlier today on this Saturday afternoon. My pal neighbour A and I. Having a barbecue and several beers looking at the tomato forest. 3pm no less. It’s usually 4pm. We used to get told off about even that on the odd occasion we did by The Witch/Controller. Our neighbour from hell.

We started a little earlier because we were excited to sift through one of the huge pots of spuds I planted back in the Spring. We’ve watched it grow for months. Watered it when it wilted back at the beginning of Summer and despaired it would drown in rain water for the rest. A said it’s like digging for treasure and she’s right. Simple pleasures but beautiful new potatoes. Enough for us and our families and another five more planters growing.

Ironically, I bought and planted these very same spuds for The Witch/Controller. I should have known when she complained I’d used the first of my very precious home made compost to plant them. Gardeners Gold no less. She didn’t want ‘bits of old food, used teabags and paper, bugs and insects in with her spuds. I smiled through gritted teeth and A just rolled her eyes. We could have suggested looking up how compost is made but at only 60 she refuses point blank to learn how to use the internet.

Tonight A mentioned again that she sometimes feels sorry for The Witch as we rarely see her about. But A is a kind person, even after what has been done to her.

I remember well the last time we went round there. The Witch told A she should not show her self harm scars over the coming Summer. That she should not wear T-shirts that let them be seen. That they were disgusting and no one should have to look at them.

I told her she was bang out of order for saying such a thing. A asked why she was always picking on her for one reason or another? We tried to change the conversation to no avail and on leaving had the door slammed behind us.

The witch hasn’t spoken to either of us since. But she hides in her spider hole friendless and angry.

Meanwhile we are eating fresh new potatoes with bacon and bacon juices and butter. ( this is what A does I haven’t tried this yet but it sounds yum) or with cheese or in casseroles and there is nothing tastier.
