The young lad that has vanished in Tenerife has kept a lot of us glued to social media group updates for the past two weeks. Wild conspiracy theories, massive assumptions and general armchair detective work had started to become a bit repetitive and pointless.
Until today when we find that most of what the online community following the case had pieced together was indeed correct right from the start. The watch/Rolex/drugs theft was out there the day after he vanished. The men in their late 30’s that took a young, off his head 19 year old an hours drive away to their little rental up in the mountains were considered dodgy from the off. I assumed a bit of paid sex as did others but many suggested they were drug runners. Renting a place out in the mountains, coming into town to drop off product and sitting round in bars sipping cognac and waiting for their money. Turns out one of these men has done 9 years for supplying heroin and crack. Fancy that.
Young people know how social media works. The different idiosyncrasies of each app, what can be saved and what cannot, the times and data they show and how much can be faked. These kids use this stuff all the time they are the ones that know. They also knew that something was very dodgy about the whole scenario right from the beginning. They picked up on a girl holidaying constantly on her social media. A 19 year old with apparently an endless stream of money to facilitate this. They found snapchats and videos, often from people who just happened to be there at the same time but captured relevant footage and they pieced together a pretty accurate account of what they think might have happened. It’s looking like they aren’t far wrong and I commend them.
Like Don’t F##k With Cats I can see Netflix rubbing their hands together right now. I hope this young man is found safe and well. He’s been mixed up with things in the past. Prison for theft, drugs or fraud is preferable than dying amongst cacti or worse surely?
On another note this time tomorrow we will be just about entering the twilight zone that is the Labour Party. May all the gods help us!
